INTRODUCTION

Applications are invited for a Senior Researcher position to join the Big Data Analytics research theme at EBTIC (www.ebtic.org).

EBTIC is a jointly established research and innovation centre by Etisalat, BT and Khalifa University and is supported by ICT Fund in the UAE. It is located at the Abu Dhabi Campus of Khalifa University with management and research staff provided by BT, Etisalat and Khalifa University.

JOB DETAILS

The successful candidate will undertake an innovative work and engage in a challenging applied research and technology down-streaming dedicated to predictive analytics in an IoT-enabled sensory environments. The candidate will take part in an ambitious program focused on development of the generic and automated methodology for consistent extraction, maximization and monetization of the value from temporal big data for our industrial/government partners and academic collaborators. The research will involve the development and testing of the scalable machine learning algorithms, data mining, feature engineering coupled with automated decision support solutions and real-time smart services composition. The role offers unique opportunities of engagement with large corporate industrial leaders and exposes the candidate to a range of applications such as predictive maintenance, customer analytics, smart city mobility and flow optimization, human activity detection from inertial sensors and emotions detection from video feeds.

EBTIC’s first and foremost priority being innovation, the successful candidate will be expected to be able to generate intellectual property that is relevant and valuable to the industry, develop Proof of Concepts to gain EBTIC partners’ support and drive effective partner engagement, as well as authoring academic publications to ensure dissemination of scientific results.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics/Statistics, Computer Science / Engineering or a related scientific discipline from a reputable university.
  • Research and development experience in one or more of following areas:
    • Required: Strong applied mathematical/analytical skills
    • Required: Knowledge and experience of developing predictive models, data processing algorithms and other data handling applications in various software development platforms.
    • Required: Knowledge of various machine learning, data mining, knowledge discovery from temporal sequence data at various frequency
    • Required: Ability to work with databases and manipulate, filter and process data with SQL
    • Required: Excellent programming skills in C++, Java and good prototyping skills in at least one: Matlab, R, Python, particularly exposed to handling large amounts of data
    • Asset: Knowledge and experience in Big Data technologies like Hadoop, Hive, MapReduce etc is an advantage
    • Asset: Familiarity with communication networks and protocols, standards, evolution of technologies and standards, small cells, etc.
    • Asset: Familiarity with the IoT sensory technologies and their deployment in the smart city applications
  • Ability to develop his/her own strategy to achieve the objectives agreed with the theme leader.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team, depending on project requirements and resources availability.
  • Commitment to work in a highly customer-oriented organisation to support ETISALAT’s and BT’s objectives and challenges as customer-centric global communications service providers.
  • Commitment to supporting Khalifa University’s vision to become a leading international centre of higher education and research in technology and science.
  • Demonstrating imaginative and creative innovation in the context of business ICT problems.
  • An inquiring mind with a preference for working within less defined boundaries, creativity, self motivation and good written and oral communication skills in English, and must be passionate about achieving excellent results.
  • Experience of program and project management will be an advantage.
