Applications are invited for a Senior Researcher position to join the Sustainability research theme at EBTIC (

EBTIC is a jointly established research and innovation centre by Etisalat, BT and Khalifa University and is supported by ICT Fund in the UAE. It is located at the Abu Dhabi Campus of Khalifa University with management and research staff provided by BT, Etisalat and Khalifa University.


The sustainability research theme at EBTIC is primarily focused on leveraging distributed artificial intelligence (e.g. mutli-agent technology) to improve the overall energy efficiency of existing and future information ecosystems (smart cities, internet of things etc.) Accordingly, candidates with experience in autonomous and adaptive systems, nature-inspired computing, machine learning and/or peer-to-peer computing will be privileged. Demonstrated coding proficiency and/or familiarity with simulation and modelling software (e.g. Matlab) is essential.

EBTIC’s first and foremost priority being innovation, the successful candidate will be expected to be able to generate intellectual property that is relevant and valuable to the industry, develop Proof of Concepts to gain EBTIC partners’ support and drive effective partner engagement, as well as authoring academic publications to ensure dissemination of scientific results.


  • PhD in Computing or a related scientific discipline from a reputable university.
  • Research and development experience in one or more of following areas:
    • Energy optimisation for wireless networks as well as understanding of mobile network operations
    • Green/low energy networks
    • Intelligent and semi-autonomous systems.
    • Power management systems (generation, including from renewable sources, and distribution), Smart Metering and Smart Grid Applications.
    • Energy efficiency in software design and distributed computing
    • Familiarity with HVAC technologies for residential and office buildings, cooling technologies for data centers and energy-efficient hardware design are desirable.
  • Ability to develop his/her own strategy to achieve the objectives agreed with the theme leader.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team, depending on project requirements and resources availability.
  • Commitment to work in a highly customer-oriented organisation to support ETISALAT’s and BT’s objectives and challenges as customer-centric global communications service providers.
  • Commitment to supporting Khalifa University’s vision to become a leading international centre of higher education and research in technology and science.
  • Demonstrating imaginative and creative innovation in the context of business ICT problems.
  • An inquiring mind with a preference for working within less defined boundaries, creativity, self motivation and good written and oral communication skills in English, and must be passionate about achieving excellent results.
  • Experience of program and project management will be an advantage.
