Dr. Kin (Danny) Poon

Chief Researcher

Dr. Kin Poon is currently leading the network optimization theme at EBTIC, setting out research and development directions to downstream research activities to EBTIC partners. He is also leading several commercial projects and identifying new research opportunities to facilitate network planning design and process. In addition, he supervises PhD/MSc research and undergraduate projects at Khalifa University and provides technical support to students.

Kin has over 15 years experience of Java, Delphi, Matlab, C#, C++ programming for commercial applications. He has strong hardware development skills and is capable of programming Digital Signal Processing CPU, Bluetooth/XBee devices, and PIC/AVR micro-controllers to deliver practical applications.

Prior to joining EBTIC, Kin was a member of the Intelligent Systems Research Centre, working as a Network Optimisation Consultant within BT Innovate and Design based at Adastral Park, UK. He was responsible for the design and implementation of new algorithms to solve different telecom network problems such as G-PON FTTP access and backhaul networks for both internal and external customers.

In 2003, he left BT and became a co-founder of Evolved Networks working as a Research and Development Principal. At Evolved Networks, his role was to identify new business opportunities for existing and new customers, develop new mathematical algorithms and provide technical directions to software developers.

Kin graduated from the University of Sunderland in 1995. He obtained a first-class honours degree in Digital Systems Engineering and won the IET outstanding student prize in the same year in the UK. He received his PhD in 2002 and has contributed to numerous technical papers, published 3 book chapters, and filed 1 trade secret and 1 patent.

His main interests include network planning, graph theory, hardware and software development, and intelligent search techniques, in particular evolutionary algorithms.
