Prof. Rasool Asal

Head of platforms and Cloud Computing

Professor Rasool Asal is Chief Researcher at British Telecommunications Research and Innovation, UK, and an industrial Professor at the Computer Science Department, University of Milan, Italy.

He has over 25 years of research and innovation experience, in both academia and industry, in Information and Communications Technology including 15 years of experience in Information Security, Distributed Systems and Application Development.

His research interests include Cloud Computing Security, IoT Security, Cyber Security, Information Assurance, Compliance Assessment, BigData Analytic, Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Network Function Virtualisation (NfV).

Rasool has recently been selected by the European Commission as one of the key experts in Software Defined Networks and Network Function Virtualisation and therefore will be taking part in the commission foresight study to help shape its perspective on the fields.

At EBTIC, Rasool leads the research and innovation activities on Information Security including Cloud Security, IoT Security and Network Virtualisation.  He has been leading innovation delivery projects with major security and cloud vendors.

Rasool is a speaker at many international conferences and events and he has presented and published research papers in leading international flagship conferences and journals (e.g. IEEE Network Magazine and Computer Network). One of Rasool’s recent publications has been one of the top six popular papers for the second month in a row (IEEE Network Magazine).

He has edited two books and he is acting as Senior Guest Editor for Journal of Mobile Multimedia Special Issue on Cloud Computing Operation. Rasool has been a member of Technical Program Committees for several flagship conferences such as IWSAC.

Rasool received his PhD degree in Physics from the University of Leicester, UK. He then moved to the University of Southampton to take up a post-doctoral position within the Electronic and Computer Science Department. Then, He joined BT to lead a development programme to support next generation IT systems.

Rasool has also been regularly offering tutorials and technical training and he has enjoyed lecturing and supervising MSc and PhD researchers.

In addition to his research activities Rasool has been recognised for his educational outreach activities through the IT Ambassador Scheme and EBTIC Innovation and Entrepreneurship Bootcamp in the UAE. IT ambassadors connects young people and their teachers with those working in the communications and IT sector. Rasool has recently introduced the first CoSpace Robotic competition to UAE to inspire a new generation of UAE students about programming, robotics, science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Rasool has recently been invited by the Emirates College of Technology in UAE to serve as an industrial expert on its Faculty of Business Information Technology Advisory Board. The Advisory Board advises the faculty about such items as industrial trends and provides feedback about their educational programs.
