Dr. Siddhartha (Sid) Shakya

Chief Researcher

Dr. Sid Shakya received his MSc degree in Intelligent Systems from the University of Sussex in 2002 and his PhD degree in Artificial Intelligence from the Robert Gordon University in 2006. He is interested in practical applications of AI, particularly in resource optimisation, demand modelling, forecasting, data analysis and simulations. He has expertise in state-of-art search heuristics and optimisation techniques, including nature inspired computing and fuzzy systems.

Prior to joining EBTIC, he was a principal researcher at BT where he led workforce optimisation research, with key focus on organisational design and operational planning. He has extensive experience of applying AI techniques in business problems, delivering significant value to business for over 10 years. He has conducted numerous data analysis and modelling work for BT, including travel and task time analysis, demand forecasting and performance prediction, and also developed platforms for intelligent optimisation and decision making, including optimal workforce deployment, capacity  planning and resource allocation. Externally, he is one of the leading researchers in the area of Estimation of Distribution algorithms, a branch of evolutionary optimisation, and is well known for his work in creating DEUM algorithms.

He has edited a book, co-authored over 50 papers and filed over 9 patents. He has also won numerous awards for his work in applying AI techniques in business problems, including awards from BCS, IET and OR Society. He has extensively collaborated with universities, supervising PhD and MSc students, and leveraging the benefit of latest developments in academia to the industry.
